CARTOGRAPHIC SKITS: Mapping Phenomena In Three Movements
Kulay-Diwa Art Gallery, May 7 (7pm) – June 10, 2010
Cartography is the art of making maps. When I was a child, I’d see my father work and analyze maps and other data for their scientific projects. Though it did not mean anything to me at that time, it seems that the memory has been embedded in my psyche and may be a reason why cartography has remained an integral element in my art. Maps are visual representations of a particular area. It represents any form of space, both real and imagined, and whose purpose is to provide us an understanding of any activity arising from that space.
As an artist navigating and charting personal and social space, cartography serves as an integral element in my works. Its usefulness cannot be disputed: the use of roadmaps when traveling, high-school “codigos”, mental and visual maps to aid memory, research notes, annotations, diagrams and flowcharts, marks, gestures, and imprints present in artworks, all of which gives one a sense of bearing in specific situations.
Cartographic Skits: Mapping Phenomena In Three Movements, is my attempt to plot and make sense and non-sense of myself in relation to the world and vice-versa. The exhibited works, composed of paintings, sculpture, and installations, are material products of thought and are concrete attempts at capturing the energy that drives the nature of phenomena. Utilizing two-dimensional and three-dimensional media, my aim is to assemble and share these experiential representations of both real and imagined reality.
